Melbourne trio Dan West, Ivan Katchoyan and Jake Mason who make up the funk band Cookin’ On 3 Burners have just released a new mini album entitled Lab Experiments Vol. 1: Mixin’. As the title of the album suggests, as does there website, their music is a experimentation that combines music of a variety of genres and ‘joins the dots between Deep Funk, Raw Soul, Organ Jazz & Boogaloo.
The 8 track album, scorched onto analog tape, opens with funky ‘Real Life Baby’, a perfect introduction as it showcases their trademark sounds and features the vocals of Emmi, who brings an Amy Winehouse soul vibe to the track. Following that is a magnificent 3 minute instrumental, ‘Enter Sandman’, which shows off the band’s impressive craftsmanship as musicians.
Overall, the album sounds incredibly authentic to the origins of the funk and jazz genres and it almost feels like stepping through time. While for the most part I mean this positively as they have given new life to classic music by reinterpreting it in the 21st century like on ‘Lone Wolfe’, other times it feels slightly dated particularly on tracks like ‘Heavy Lenny’.
Ultimately, if you are a funk fan you'll really enjoy this record!
